Social Security benefit calculation:
The tool uses the monthly benefit you provide at full retirement age and applies standard early-filing reductions and delayed-retirement credits through age 70.
Working before full retirement age:
The tool uses the 2026 retirement earnings-test limits in current-dollar terms: $24,480 for someone under full retirement age for the full year, with $1 of benefits withheld for every $2 of excess earnings; and $65,160 in the year full retirement age is reached, with $1 withheld for every $3 of excess earnings before the full-retirement-age month. Future limits may change.
Retirement timing:
Current earned income is assumed to continue until the retirement age you entered and then fall to $0 for Social Security earnings-test purposes. IRA and 401(k) withdrawals, pensions, interest, dividends, and capital gains are not treated as earned income for the retirement earnings test.
Financial resources:
Your financial-asset range and your stated ability to delay Social Security are used as qualitative liquidity inputs when comparing earlier and later claiming. The tool does not assume or project an investment return, portfolio performance, or a specific withdrawal strategy.
Longevity:
Health and immediate-family longevity are used as simplified sensitivity inputs. They are not a prediction of your lifespan and cannot predict how long you will live.
Married households:
Spouse information is used only for an approximate survivor-benefit sensitivity. This tool is not a complete determination of spousal, survivor, divorced-spouse, disability, dependent, or other Social Security entitlements.
Present-value comparison:
The tool uses a 2% real discount rate to compare benefit streams received at different times. This is a planning assumption, not an investment-return projection.
Current-law assumption:
The tool models scheduled Social Security benefits under current law and does not predict future legislation, changes to program financing, tax-law changes, Medicare premiums, IRMAA, or individual tax consequences.
